EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The Michigan State women's golf team shot a final round 316 en route to a third-place finish (300-300-316-916) at Mary Fossum Invitational. on Sunday (Sept. 22). After the first two rounds of play the Spartans stood in first place, but were unable to hold off eventual winner Kent State (907). Runner-up, Wisconsin, finished with a 914 while Illinois (921) Kansas State (931) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Head coach, Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, was happy with the individual effort by junior Allison Fouch (2nd), but looks forward to seeing a better team effort.
"We saw some brlliance last week from one player and some brilliance this week from another player, but it takes four players every round," said Slobodnik-Stoll.
Fouch shot a final round 2-over 74 (75-72-74-221) to force a sudden death playoff with Nebraska senior Sarah Sasse. It took two playoff holes for Sasse to capture her third straight Fossum Invitational, but Fouch is not discouraged.
"I'm pleased with how I played this weekend," said Fouch "But unfortunately things didn't turn out the way I wanted them to in the playoff."
Junior Sarah Martin's 7-over 81 (75-75-81-231) gave her a share of 14th place. Freshman Dana Burleigh posted a 7-over 81 (77-74-81-232) in the final round of play, which was good enough for 17th and junior Ann Marie Kersten (18th) also finished in the top 20 after shooting a 6-over 80 (73-80-80-233) in the final round.
Senior Jessica Till finished tied for 31st with a three-round score of 78-79-81--238.
Four Spartans golfed as individuals at the Mary Fossum Invitational. Redshirt freshman Jennifer Johnson finished tied for 51st with a 80-89-77-246, while redshirt freshman Christy Jonkhoff placed tied for 59th with a 80-85-83--248. Junior Sara Mess was 68th with a three-round total of 252 (83-84-85). Junior Lauren Youngdahl was 76th (90-89-93).
