BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - Michigan State golfer Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) failed to qualify for the match play portion of the 100th Western Amateur at Point o' Woods Golf and Country Club today, missing an eight-foot par putt on the first hole of a five-man playoff.
Jorgensen, the 2002 Big Ten Championship medalist and third-team All-American honoree, was one of five golfers to tie for 13th place with a four-round score of 283 (72-71-70-70). The top 16 golfers moved on to Saturday morning's first round of match play, however, forcing a playoff for the final four spots.
Nathan Fritz of Greenwood, Ind., Jim Seki of Stanford, Calif., Brady Stockton of San Ramon, Calif., and John Klauk of Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla., each posted par or better on the first playoff hole and advanced after Jorgensen's bogey. Kevin Stadler of Englewood, Colo., and Camilo Villegas of Gainesville, Fla., shared medalist honors through the four rounds of stroke play - each carded identical scored of 276.
The Western Amateur continues tomorrow, when the 16-player field will be pared to four in two 18-hole match play events. The first round gets underway tomorrow morning with the quarterfinals set for the afternoon. Match play semifinals are scheduled for Sunday morning with the tournament final slated for Sunday afternoon.
