CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. - Michigan State golfer Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) shot a 36-hole score of 151 to place third at yesterday's U.S. Amateur Open sectional qualifying event at Cedar Chase Golf Club. The junior-to-be is an alternate qualifier for next month's U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.
Lubahn, advanced to the quarterfinals of last week's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, finished two strokes behind co-medalists Stephen Polanski of Livonia and Russ Cunningham of Dewitt, who both earned automatic berths into the U.S. Amateur. Lubahn was joined on the alternate list by Derek Arnett of Hartland, who shot a two-round score of 154.
Three sectional qualifying events are scheduled in Michigan over the next five days. The Country Club of Boyne in Harbor Springs will host the state's second qualifier tomorrow. Medalist Golf Club in Marshall and Northville Hills Golf Club in Northville are the sites of similar events Monday.
More than 7,500 golfers entered the U.S Amateur Open through sectional qualifying last year. Past winners of the event include Tiger Woods (1994-96), Justin Leonard (1992) and Phil Mickelson (1990).
