WASHINGTON, Mich. - A showdown between Michigan State golfers Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) and Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship never materialized as both players dropped quarterfinal matches at the Orchards Golf Club this morning.
Jorgensen, the 2002 Big Ten Championship medalist and third-team All-American honoree, was defeated by Chris Stroud of Groves, Texas 1 up. Stroud took the match lead with a birdie on the 17th hole, then clinched the win with another birdie on 18.
Lubahn, who cruised into the quarterfinals with a pair of decisive victories Thursday, fell to Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash. 2 up despite making six birdies against just one bogey during his round. Moore, however, made seven birdies, shooting the equivalent of a course-record 65.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship concludes tomorrow with a 36-hole final. At stake is an invitation to the next Masters Tournament, an exemption from local qualifying for the 2003 U.S. Open, an exemption from regional qualifying at the next 10 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships and exemptions from sectional qualifying at next year's U.S. Amateur Championship and U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
