Terek, Deering sweep Central Collegiate Pole Vault

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) and Matt Deering (Dowagiac, Mich.) finished first and second, respectively, in the pole vault at Saturday's Central Collegiate Invitational hosted by Central Michigan University.
The Spartan duo repeated their performance from last weekend's Hillsdale Relays, where the also swept the top two spots in the pole vault. Terek, who is a likely provisional qualfier for the NCAA Track and Field Championships later this month, placed first by clearing a height of 17 feet. Deering earned second place with a successful vault of 16 feet, 5.5 inches.
Sophomore Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) recorded third-place showings in the shot put and discus. He attained a throw of 56 feet, 5.75 inches in the shot and posted a mark of 165 feet, seven inches in the discus.
Junior Andy Lixey (East Tawas, Mich.) was the only other Spartan to earn a top-three finish on the day. Lixey placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.37, just 2/100ths of a second behind Eastern Michigan's Neil Kirk.
The MSU men's track team is off until May 17-19, when they travel to Madison, Wis., to take part in the 2002 Big Ten Championships.
