BATON ROUGE, La. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) is in sixth place halfway through the decathlon competition at the 2002 NCAA Men's Track and Field Championships.
The two-time Big Ten decathlon champion scored 4,105 points in five events Friday - the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes, long jump, high jump and shot put. Louisiana State's Claston Bernard sits atop the leaderboard after day one of the decathlon. He scored 4,385 points, 112 better than second-place Ryan Harlan of Rice.
Terek also competed in the pole vault finals today, but failed to clear in his lone attempt at 17-10 1/2. The pole vault finals took place at the same time as two of the decathlon events, forcing the Spartan senior to pass on his first two attempts.
The decathlon concludes tomorrow with the remaining five events - the 110-meter hurdles, the 1500-meter run, discus throw, javelin and pole vault.
