Williams Wins Big Ten Title In Triple Jump

MADISON, Wis. - MSU's Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) won her first Big Ten outdoor championship in the triple jump with a leap of 42-10 3/4 today in the final day of competition at the University of Wisconsin. The junior, who earned provisional qualifying status for the NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La., later this month with her effort at the conference meet, won the triple jump at the 2001 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Two State distance runners - sophomores Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Jamie Krzyminski (Corunna, Mich.) - provisionally qualified for the national meet in 5,000-meter run two days after achieving the same feat in the 10,000-meter run. Carson placed third in the 5,000-meter with a time of 16:38.22, while Krzyminski was fourth at 16:38.25.
The Spartans one other top-five performance on the day. Senior Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.), who broke the Big Ten record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday, finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:29.25.
In the team standings, the MSU women placed ninth with 71 points, the most points by the Spartans at the Big Ten Championships since 1992. Michigan scored 109 points to take team honors.
