MADISON, Wis. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) duplicated a feat at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships he achieved last year. The Spartan senior won his second straight Big Ten title in the pole vault Sunday, one day after repeating as the conference champion in the decathlon.
Terek, who set a school record in the pole vault with a leap of 18-0 1/2 at last weekend's Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., cleared a height of 17-10 1/4 Sunday. Runner-up Dino Efthimiou of Indiana successfully jumped 17-3 1/2, as did MSU's Matt Deering (Dowagiac, Mich.), who finished third and earned provisional qualifying status for the NCAA Championships.
Andy Lixey (East Tawas, Mich.) was also a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships. The Spartan junior finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.77.
MSU's Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.), meanwhile, won her first Big Ten outdoor championship in the triple jump with a leap of 42-10 3/4 today. The junior, who earned provisional qualifying status for the NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La., later this month with her effort at the conference meet, won the triple jump at the 2001 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Two State distance runners - sophomores Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Jamie Kryzminski (Corunna, Mich.) - provisionally qualified for the national meet in 5,000-meter run two days after achieving the same feat in the 10,000-meter run. Carson placed third in the 5,000-meter with a time of 16:38.22, while Kryzminski was fourth at 16:38.25.
The Spartans had two other top-five performances on the day. Sophomore Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 58-1, while Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.), with a time of 4:29.25, was fifth in the 1,500-meter run.
In the team standings, the Spartan men finished in seventh place with 47.5 points. Wisconsin, with 157.5 points, won its third straight conference title. The MSU women placed ninth with 71 points, the most points by the Spartans at the Big Ten Championships since 1992. Michigan scored 109 points to take team honors.
