Terek Dominates Day One Of Big Ten Decathlon Competition

MADISON, Wis. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) is halfway to capturing his second straight Big Ten championship in the decathlon.
The defending conference men's track and field athlete of the year placed no lower than third in five events today, racking up 4,058 points at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin. Terek, who set the Big Ten record in the in the decathlon at last year's championships with 7,695 points, placed first in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash and shot put, finished second in the long jump and was third in the high jump.
The remaining five decathlon events - the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meter run - will be held tomorrow. Terek, who has already automatically qualified for the decathlon competition at this year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Baton Rouge, La., later this month, is also the reigning Big Ten champion in the pole vault, which takes place Sunday.
Also tomorrow is the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase - State's Jason Mueller (Shelby, Ohio) is currently ranked third in the Big Ten in that event.
