MADISON, Wis. - MSU sophomores Jamie Kryzminski (Corunna, Mich.) and Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) placed second and third, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run to wrap up day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin.
Kryzminski, who has already qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Baton Rouge, La., later this month, finished with a time of 34:05.20. Carson, a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet, completed the race in 34:35.60. Junior Cindy Durocher (Parry Sound, Ont.) placed eighth in the 10,000-meter with a time of 36:02.15.
Carson and Kryminski are also aiming for a top finish in the 5,000-meter run, which takes place Sunday.
The Spartan women wrapped up the first day of competition in third place at the Big Ten Championships with 15 points. Purdue sits atop the leaderboard with 25 1/2 points, while Wisconsin holds second place with 21 points.
Among the events tomorrow is the long jump trials and finals. The Spartans' Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) is one of the favorites in the long jump and owns the second-best leap in the Big Ten coming into the weekend. MSU's Sarah Pepera (Ortonville, Mich.) has the conference's second-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase -- the finals in that event are scheduled for tomorrow as well.
