EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) has been named Big Ten Men's Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week after taking first place in the pole vault at the Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor last Saturday.
Terek, the Big Ten Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2001, placed first with a leap of 18-0 1/2 (5.50 meters). The vault is tied for the fifth best in NCAA Division I this season and broke the previous outdoor school record of 17-7 he set last season. Terek, who owns the top six vaults in MSU outdoor competition, also holds the school's indoor record at 18-2 3/4, which he set in 2001. In addition to the pole vault, he's posted the third-best point total among NCAA Division I track athletes in the decathalon this season, compiling 7,926 points en route to a first-place finish at the Mount SAC Relays in California last month.
Sharing the conference honor with Terek was Michigan freshman Alan Webb. The Spartans travel to Madison, Wis., this weekend for the 2002 Big Ten Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The conference meet gets underway Friday and concludes Sunday.
