Terek, who held the top spot by one point over Oakley International's Andy Giesler after day one of competition Thursday, extended his lead with the top times in the 100 meter and 400 meter dashes. The score is the third-best decathalon point total in the NCAA so far this season and automatically qualifies the Spartan senior for the upcoming NCAA Track and Field Championships.
All-American Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) placed eighth in the Friday's discus throw with a toss of 156-6. Competing for MSU at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday were senior Matt Deering (Dowagiac, Mich.) in the pole vault and senior Jeff Kus (Grand Ledge, Mich.) in the high jump. Manz and Terek are scheduled to compete Sunday in the shot put and pole vault, respectively.
In Kalamazoo, meanwhile, Michigan State distance runners led the Spartans at Saturday's Western Michigan Quadrangular at Kanley Track, earning 37 of the team's 83 points.
The duo of junior Andy Lixey (East Tawas, Mich.) and sophomore Jason Mueller (Shelby, Ohio) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1500 meter run. Lixey posted a time of 3:51.43, while Mueller ran a 3:52.68. MSU freshman Andy Marsh (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and sophomore teammate Kevin Yokom (Kentwood, Mich.) duplicated Lixey and Mueller's feat in the 5000 meter run. Marsh placed second with a time of 14:46.77 with Yokom finishing just .15 seconds later.
Sophomore Steve Sherer (Saline, Mich.) and freshman Kevin Clary (Kalispell, Mont.) recorded top-four showings in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Sherer's time of 9:25.80 was good for a third-place finish, while Clary finished fourth at 9:29.00.
Junior Wilson Ogbeide and senior Ben Logan (Harrisburg, Ore.) earned second place in the 400 meter dash and the javelin throw, respectively. Ogbeide's time of 47.88 seconds in the 400 meter was .14 seconds behind that of Western Michigan's Josh Culver, while Logan finished behind the Broncos' Tom Torchia with a throw of 162-feet, four inches. Also recording a top-three effort was senior Joel Gaff (Traverse City, Mich.), who placed third in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles at 56.55 seconds.
Western Michigan took team honors with 263 points. Central Michigan finished second with 152.5 points, followed by Bowling Green with 105.5 points.
