Adelaine Captures First In Three Field Events At WMU Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track and field team took second with 140.5 points at the WMU Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Saturday, April 20. The Spartans competed against Northern Illinois (3rd with 52.50 pts.) and host Western Michigan (1st with 160 pts.) at Kanley Track.
Sophomore Sarah Adelaine (Harbor Springs, Mich.) repeated last year's three-win performance at Western Michigan winning the shot put (44'04 1/4"), discus (140'09") and hammer throw (150'07"). Adelaine's hammer throw marks a new school record and her discuss throw is the second best all time by a Spartan. Adelaine also captured second in the javelin throw (123'01"), earning 26 of the Spartans 140.5 total points.
Junior Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) produced two new season-bests for the Spartans as she won the long jump (19'10 3/4") and triple jump (41'06 1/2"). Williams currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten in the long jump and 15th in the Big Ten in the triple jump. She also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.02), gaining the Spartans a total of 19 team points.
Senior sprinter Swanne Gordon (Pointe Claire, Quebec) finished first in the 400-meter dash with a season best time of 55.66. Freshman Renee Kaylor (Hanover, Pa.) finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.23. Kaylor currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten for the 800-meter event.
Senior Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) captured first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:35.41. Sophomore Jamie Krzyminski (Corunna, Mich.) came in second (4:38.48) and sophomore Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) came in third (4:39.68). Freshman Michelle Martin (Richland, Mich.) finished first in the pole vault (10'11 3/4"), while juniors Nicole Grucz (Mount Clemens, Mich.) and Shiloh Wint (Westland, Mich.) finished second (10'06").
Junior Lynlee Phillips (Shamong, N.J.) recorded a new season-best by winning the javelin throw with a mark of 139'08". She took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 150'07".
