FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Michigan State's Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) placed second in the pole vault Saturday at the NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Terek and four other vaulters cleared a height 17-11.75, but BYU's Jeff Hansen took first-place honors because he had fewer misses on earlier attempts. Terek, a 2001 All-American and last year's Big Ten Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year, earned eight points with his runner-up finish, putting the Spartans in a tie for 23rd place. Tennessee took the team title.
Steve Sherer (Saline, Mich.) was the only other Spartan taking part in the NCAA Indoors. The sophomore distance runner placed 15th in the 3000-meter run, posting a time of 8:10.48. Villanova's Adrian Blincoe finished first with a time of 8:01.48.
The MSU men' track and field team begins the 2002 outdoor season in two weeks when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the University of Alabama Relays March 22-23.
