MSU Women's Tennis Defeats Florida A&M

TALAHASSEE, Fla. - The Michigan State women's tennis team started it's spring break trip in fine fashion, defeating Florida A&M, 6-1, Tuesday in Talahassee, Fla.
The Spartans, who already increased last season's win total by improving to 7-4, swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Freshmen Mandy Caldemeyer and Keri Thompson earned an 8-3 victory at No. 1, Sophomores Caroline Lay and Trine Lise Juliussen won 8-6 at No. 2, and freshman Dora Vastag paired with junior Asa Liden to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 3
In singles, MSU won five of six matches, with four of the wins coming in straight sets. Vastag had to go three sets at No. 1 but came out with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory. At No. 2, Liden cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Lay had a similar 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4. Thompson rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5, while Juliussen won by an almost identical 6-4, 6-3 score at No. 6. The only singles victim for MSU was Caldemeyer, who lost a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 contest at No. 3.
Freshman Kate Thomas (No. 7) and sophomore Josie Schmude (No. 8) also won a pair of exhibition singles matches for MSU.
The Spartans will continue their Florida trip with a March 7 match at No. 44 Florida State.
