Gray Maynard Places Seventh At NCAA Wrestling Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Michigan State wrestling team finished the NCAA Championships in 34th-place with 15.5 points and Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev./St. Edward) placed seventh at 157 pounds to earn All-America honors in front of a sold-out crowd in the final day of action at Pepsi Arena Saturday afternoon (March 23).
Maynard, a No. 9 seed, defeated No. 10 Griff Powell of Illinois in a decisive 5-1 victory in the seventh-place match. Maynard controlled the entire bout, leading 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 at the end of the second. He scored a takedown in the final period for the 5-1 win. By finishing in the top eight of his weight class, Maynard earned All-America honors at 157 pounds for the second-consecutive year.
Minnesota claimed its second-straight national championship with 126.5 points.
The finals of the NCAA Championships will be televised on tape-delay tonight (March 23) on ESPN 2 at 7:30 p.m.
