Women's Tennis Nipped by Florida International, 4-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Michigan State women's tennis team fell to No. 29-ranked Florida International 4-3 Saturday in a neutral-court match played in Tallahassee, Fla. The loss drops MSU to 7-6 on the season, with all six losses coming against ranked opponents.
In doubles play, the No. 3 team of junior Asa Liden (Vandersborg, Sweden) and freshman Dora Vastag (Okemos, Mich.) won a quick 8-4 contest. Sophomores Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) claimed the doubles point in an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 position.
In singles action, MSU won in straight-sets at the third and sixth flights. In the third flight, Lay defeated Maria Montoyo, 6-4, 6-0, to earn the Spartans' second point. Juliussen also defeated Nazly Buronyi, 6-3, 6-4, in the last flight to secure MSU's third point. In the second flight, Liden fought hard, but eventually fell to Mei Ly, 6-4, 7-5, what turned out to be the decisive match. The Panthers took four of six singles matches to merit the victory.
Michigan State concludes its Florida trip Sunday, March 10 against South Florida.
