MSU Women's Tennis Drops Bowling Green, 6-1

The Michigan State women's tennis team won its third straight match of the season by downing Bowling Green, 6-1, Sunday (Feb. 3) at Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 1-3.
"It was a pretty solid win, everyone played well," said MSU assistant coach Brett Page. "It was very impressive winning 6-1, by dominating a team that had beaten us in the past."
The Spartans captured the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, freshmen Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) and Mandy Caldemeyer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) started the team out by winning the closest doubles contest by an 8-4 result, while sophomores Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) claimed an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 position. The Spartans preserved the doubles sweep, in a victory at No. 3 doubles, as junior ?sa Lid?n (Vandersborg, Sweden) and freshman Dora Vastag (Okemos, Mich.) won 8-2.
In singles action, Lay won a quick decision at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0, over Devon Bissinger. The Spartans built off Lay's momentum, as Caldemeyer won handily 6-3, 6-1, at the third flight and Liden was also victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
"Lay winning quickly helped pump up the rest of the team," Page claimed.
Juliussen was the only Spartan who tasted defeat Sunday, as she lost a close match at No. 4 singles to Bowling Green's Susie Schoenberger 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Vastag rallied from a first set loss to post a win at the top flight 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Lisa Maloney, and Thomas sealed the day by defeating the Falcons' Gaby Coello 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans will be back in action Friday, Feb. 8, when Michigan State will host the DePaul Blue Demons at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
