EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team won convincingly dropping Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility Sunday (Feb. 10). The Green and White swept the Flames in singles competition and took two of three doubles matches to improve their record to 4-2 on the season.
"A shut-out at home is always good, and it's good for the players," said MSU head coach Tim Bauer. "I'm pleased by today's outcome. We schedule in order to grow throughout the season, and looking at this weekend, we had the ability to win both matches, but I'm more concerned about becoming a better team."
In doubles play, the No. 3 team of junior Asa Liden (Vandersborg, Sweden) and freshman Dora Vastag (Okemos, Mich.) won a quick 8-2 contest. The No. 1 doubles tandem of freshmen Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) and Mandy Caldemeyer (Grand Rapids,Mich.) lost a close match by an 8-5 result, but sophomores Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) claimed the doubles point in an 8-6, come-from-behind victory at the No. 2 position.
In singles action, Vastag won a quick decision in flight one, 6-1, 6-2, over nationally-ranked Nicole Derouin. The Spartans built off Vastag's momentum, as Caldemeyer won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, and Lay wore down Britta Dohmann, at the third flight, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
"Dora Vastag beat a ranked opponent today, and I think were going to see some big wins from her this year," said Bauer. "Mandy Caldemeyer, a walk-on freshman, had her first win today at number two singles, and I thought that was big."
Liden moved to 5-0 in dual match play, defeating Stephanie Matko in No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2. Juliussen breezed past her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 flight, and on the sixth court, Keri Thompson disposed of Stalzer, 6-3. 6-4.
Michigan State will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 16, when the Spartans travel to Miami of Ohio. The Spartans will also play Sunday, Feb. 17, at Ball State. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
