TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The No. 19 Michigan State women's cross country team had a successful outing at the NCAA Championships hosted by Indiana State Monday, finishing in 12th place. Brigham Young won the championship with 85 points, defeating second-place Stanford which had 113 points.
Junior Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was once again the top Spartan finisher, covering the 6k course in 20:25.6 to finish in 20th position. Carson finished 27th at last year's Championships with a time of 21:21. Junior Jamie Krzyminski (Corunna) was as usual not far behind, placing 33rd in 20:46.7, which is almost a minute and a half faster than her time of 22:14 at last year's championships that placed her 81st.
Junior Sarah Pepera (Ortonville), who did not run in last year's championships, was MSU's third-best runner, placing 72nd in 21:14.8. Senior Cindy Durocher (Parry Sound, Ont.) was 99th in 21:27.9, showing dramatic improvement from last year when she finished 175th in 23:12. Sophomore Natalie Stein (North Hollywood, Calif.) rounded out MSU's point-scorers with a 141st-place finish in 21:51.6, an improvement of 40 seconds from last year.
Also competing for MSU was sophomore Gail Stec (Ypsilanti), who was 194th with a time of 22:30.2, and freshman Brittany Ballard (Midland), who placed 203rd in 22:40.6.
MSU's 12th-place finish is its third best ever finish nationally. The Spartans placed fourth in 1981 and 11th last year.
