WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State women's soccer team earned its 10th win of the season in dramatic fashion Sunday (Oct. 13), defeating No. 20 Purdue, 2-1, in West Lafayette, Ind. The two teams traded goals in the final six minutes of the match, but it was the Spartans who came away with the win. MSU is now 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten while Purdue drops to 9-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.
MSU struck first at the 21:32 mark on its second shot of the game when Abby Shephed (So., Milford) scored unassisted. With the Spartans leading, 1-0, the team's respective defenses took over, as there were no more shots on goal in the first half.
The Spartans came out attacking early in the second half, registering two shots on goal within the first three minutes of the session. Purdue nearly tied the game in the 59th minute when Lauren Sesselmann hit the crossbar. The Boilermakers tied the game at the 84:46 mark, and it looked as though the game would have to be settled in overtime. But with 1:40 to play in the game, a Purdue foul gave Andrea Sied (Jr., Livonia) a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box that found its way into the back of the net, giving State an eventual 2-1 victory.
The Spartan defense was strong all day as goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Jr., Madison, Wis.) had to make just one save.
MSU returns to action Friday (Oct. 18) when it travels to Northwestern to take on the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. ET.
