Ann Arbor, Mich. -The Michigan State men's golf team is tied for second place after day one of the Wolverine Invitational. The Spartans shot a team score of 292, which places them only seven shots behind current tournament leader Minnesota, which shot 285. Tournament host Michigan is tied for 10th place with a score of 301. There are 20 teams competing in the tournament.
The Spartans were lead by junior co-captain Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.), who finished the day with a two-under 69 and is currently in a three-way tie for first place.
Senior co-captain Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) and junior John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) both carded rounds of 73.
Freshman Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) shot 77 in his first round of collegiate golf. Rising sophomore J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) finished with a 78 on the day.
"Overall it was a good start," said Michigan State head coach Mark Hankins who felt his team was able to shoot three solid rounds. Hankins does believe, however, that his team is capable of playing better. "We did not play up to our potential."
Michigan State will begin the final round on Sunday, September 30th playing 18 holes. Action is expected to get underway at 8.00 a.m. with the first tee time.
