EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State sophomore Marcus Taylor (Lansing, Mich.) has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason All-American Team. The point guard for the men's basketball team is one of 50 candidates selected based on last year's individual performance and team records.
Taylor is currently on the USA Basketball World Championships for Young Men Team playing in Japan. In his freshman season at Michigan State, Taylor appeared in 30 games for the Spartans, starting nine. He was the fifth-leading scorer for the Spartans at 7.4 points per game and second in assists at 3.6 per contest. Taylor will enter next season as MSU's leading returning scorer.
Each summer, the John R. Wooden Award office samples a committee of its voters from across the nation as to which players should be highlighted in the preseason as potential finalists (Wooden Award All-Americans) for the John R. Wooden Award. The committee selects 50 players and lists them alphabetically.
To be named to the Wooden Award All-American Team or to be the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy, a player must be making progress towards graduation and carry a cumulative grade average of at least 2.0. Voters are asked to consider a player's contribution to his team and his character when voting for the All-American Team or Player of the Year honors.
On Tuesday March 26, 2002, the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. One member of the Wooden Award All-American Team will be selected on Sunday April 7, 2002 as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year."
