EAST LANSING, Mich. - MSU golfers John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) and Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.) were both denied in their attempts to qualify for the 2001 U.S. Open. The pair failed to make the cut at separate sectional qualifiers Monday.
Goik, who completed his Spartan career this spring, shot a 36-hole score of 150 (72-78) at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Westerville, Ohio. Goik's score was the sixth-best showing by an amateur at the Westerville qualifier, which featured 120 golfers and numerous PGA Tour members. He advanced to sectional play after finishing in a second-place tie at a local qualifying match at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Howell, Mich., last month.
Koskinen, a junior-to-be who earned medalist honors at the Hunters Ridge qualifier by shooting an 18-hole score of 68, took part in the sectional match at Cantigny Golf Club in Chicago Monday but was disqualified. He was one of four golfers in the 40-member field at Cantigny who did not finish the 36-hole event.
The 101st U.S. Open is scheduled for June 14-17 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
