Women's Track Competes At Jesse Owens Track Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State women's track and field team competed at the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio, Sunday (May 6). The 16th annual Jesse Owens Classic featured 21 schools, including some of the top track and field programs in the nation.
Three Spartans placed in the top 10 in the 400-meter dash led by Shanna Ashley (Clarendon, Jamaica) with a third-place finish in a season-best time of 56.91. Kiesha Spight (Detroit, Mich.) was eighth while Akilah Washington (Detroit, Mich.) was 10th. Washington also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash.
Spight placed eighth in the 200-meter dash in the afternoon session. Junior Swanne Gordon (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) recorded an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run.
A pair of Spartans placed in the top six in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Katie Bonner (Canton, Mich.) was third in a season-best time of 10:31.06, while sophomore Marisa Ryan (Carson City, Mich.) was sixth in 11:14.71.
In the field events, freshman Sarah Adelaine (Harbor Springs, Mich.) was seventh in the javelin throw (114-4), 10th in the hammer throw (137-6), 10th in the shotput (42-05.50) and 12th in the discus throw (120-10). Adelaine posted season-best throws in both the shot put and the hammer throw. Junior Nadia Ricketts (Kingston, Jamaica) recorded two top-10 finishes, finishing seventh in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump.
Michigan State heads to the Paddock Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, next weekend (May 11-12).
