Eugene, Ore. - Michigan State junior Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) earned All-America honors for his performance in the decathlon at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Men's Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. (May 30-June 2). He placed fourth overall with 7,645 points, including a first-place finish in the decathlon pole vault (17-5 1/2) and a third-place showing in the 1,500-meter run (4:24.92).
"Paul dug down deep and did what he had to do for the 1,500-meter run," MSU assistant coach Will Wabaunsee said. "He did an outstanding job in the last three events."
Terek came out strong in the final day of decathlon competition with a first-place finish in the pole vault, third place in the 1,500-meter run and two seventh-place performances in the discus (134-2) and javelin (177-5). Terek went into day two of the decathlon in eighth place(3,811 points) and moved up four spots in the final standings. Junior Santiago Lorenzo of Oregon took first in the decathlon with 7,889 points.
"I'm not mad, but I didn't do great," commented Terek. "All and all I came back and put together a decent decathlon. There is always next season and it just started about 15-20 minutes ago."
During the 2001 indoor season, Terek earned All-America honors for his eighth-place finish in the pole vault during the NCAA Indoor Championships.
