Eugene, Ore. - Senior Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) is representing Michigan State at the 2001 NCAA Men's Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. (May 30-June 2). Terek closes day one in hot pursuit of a top position in the decathlon.
After five events, Terek is in eighth place with 3,811 points, while Tennessee's Stephen Harris leads the decathlon with 4,245 points. Terek placed third in the last event of the day, the 400-meter run, with a time of 49.34. The pole vault, Terek's strong event, as well as the 1500-meter run are part of the day two (May 31) itinerary. At the 2001 Big Ten Championship, Terek placed first in both events and second in the discus throw.
"Tomorrow we will take one event at a time," states assistant coach Will Wabaunsee. "I think he'll surprise some people and even himself. We want to come out strong in the field events and run a solid, clean race (110-meter hurdles)."
Terek also competed in the individual pole vault finals today (May 30). He passed until 17' 10 1/2" and recorded no height. USC's Dennis Kholev won the pole vault with a mark of 18' 6 ?".
"Paul was still competing in the high jump (decathlon) when the finals for the pole vault started," commented Wabaunsee. "He high jumped really well so we passed height in the pole vault."
Action continues tomorrow when Terek competes in the last five decathlon events starting at noon with the 110-meter hurdles.
