BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State senior Paul Terek (Livonia, Mich.) was named the 2001 Big Ten Athlete of the Meet for his performance at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, May 18-20 in Bloomington, Ind. Terek finished the weekend with two first-place finishes and a qualifying mark in the decathlon for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Oregon (May 31- June 3).
Terek took first in the pole vault (17' 5 1/2"), provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Saturday (May 19), Terek set a new school and conference record with a first-place finish in the decathlon (7,695), assuring him a trip to Oregon.
"Neither of us (Dino Efthimiou, Indiana) jumped to our abilities today," Terek commented. "I wish the competition would have been better. I would have been just as happy finishing second if we both would have been jumping better and could have raised the bar. He beat me in indoors this year so I have a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth! Hopefully we can redeem ourselves at Nationals."
Sophomore Andy Lixey (East Tawas, Mich.) finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.30. Jason Van Swol of Illinois won the event (1:47.88).
Freshman Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 58' 4 1/2". Jeremy Allen (Iowa) placed first (62' 2 1/4").
In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Jasmine Alverson (Inkster, Mich.) finished fifth with a time of 14.24. Wisconsin's T.J. Nelson took the event (13.49).
Wisconsin won the championship with 135 points, followed by Ohio State (117.5) and Penn State taking third (98.83). MSU finished tied for eighth with Michigan (43).
Spartan athletes will be competing next in the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon (May 31-June 3).
