
Women's Golf Wins 2001 Big Ten Championship

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Michigan State women's golf team took first place at the 2001 Big Ten Championship at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn. The Spartans shot a 308 under strong wind conditions on the final day of competition to finish with a four-round total of 1,219 (302-300-309-308). Northwestern and Indiana tied for second at 1,230.
The last time Michigan State won the women's golf conference championship was in 1982. With the 2001 title, the MSU women's golf team becomes the first Spartan women's team to win a conference title since 1996-97 (basketball and volleyball).
Redshirt freshman Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) greatly contributed to the MSU title, concluding the championship with a career-best second-place finish, tied with Purdue's Kari Darmon at 303. Ohio State's Mollie Fankhauser took home the individual title, shooting a four-round total of 70-77-78=76.
Fouch entered the 18th hole just tied with Fankhauser. Fouch , however, bogeyed par-5, while Fankhauser birdied. The Spartan sophomore posted a four round total of 78-70-76-79=303. Darmon fired a 74-75-80-74=303.
Spartan junior Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) closely followed Fouch on the leaderboard, firing a 74-75-80-75=304 to take fourth place. 2000 conference champion Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) tied for 10th, shooting a 78 for the day to total 308 (76-75-79-78). Senior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot 76-80-74-79=309 to tie for 14th place.
True freshman Sarah Martin (Grosse Ille, Mich.) carded a 76-84-82-76=318 total to tie for 29th in her conference championship debut. Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) finished 48th with a score of 79-81-81-85=326.
Next up, the Spartans will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships with a strong showing at the NCAA Regionals, May 10-12.
