EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team sits in second place after two rounds of the 33rd annual Bruce Fossum/TeamGearOnline.com Invitational. As a team, the Spartans shot a two-round score of 572 (284-288 and enter Sunday's final round just seven shots behind current tournament leader Northwestern, which posted a team score of 565 (278-288). Big Ten foes Minnesota (293-281=574), Iowa (291-285=576) and Wisconsin (284-295=579) round out the top five.
Michigan State received its top individual performance Saturday from junior Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) who fired a team-best 142 after two rounds. Clark got off to a great start with a two-under-par 69 in the first round. He then fired a 73 in the second round score.
Chris Thayer of Northwestern leads all individuals Saturday after Saturday's first two rounds with a score of 136. Thayer carded a remarkable seven-under-par 64 in the first round.
Senior co-captain Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.) came into this weekend's action as the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week and continued to provide the Spartans with solid play Saturday, shooting a 72 in the first round and a 71 in round two. He finished the day with a score of 143, putting him in 11th place overall.
Michigan State sophomore John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) also sits in 11th place as he recorded a two-round score of 143. Koskinen had an impressive 71 in the first round
Sophomore Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) was consistent in each of Saturday's first two rounds. Jorgensen began the day by shooting a 73 in the first round, then came back to shoot a second round score of 71.
Senior co-captain Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.) shot an uncharacteristic 160 Saturday. Riedel, one of the team's top performers, struggled Saturday, turning in back-to-back rounds of 80.
The final round of 18 holes will get underway Sunday (April 29) with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
