East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (12-9, 2-2) fell 7-2 to Purdue (8-14, 2-2) on Friday (March 30) in their home opener at Kobs Field. The Spartans' bats fell silent, as their four hits was the teams second-lowest total of the year. The loss also snapped MSU's four-game winning streak.
Purdue took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single down the right field line by David Harrell and then added another on a wild pitch in the fourth.
The Spartans cut the lead in half when Rick Court (Sr., Grosse Pointe) hit a two-out solo home run to right field to make the score 2-1. Purdue answered in the fifth with two more runs off three straight hits to go ahead 4-1. They put up three more runs over the final three innings to take a 7-1 lead into the ninth inning. Nate Sickler went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Boilermakers.
MSU was able to put one more run across the plate in the ninth, when a single by Court scored Bob Malek (So., Canton). Court went 2-for-3 and knocked in both Spartan runs.
Dylan Putnam (Jr., Ann Arbor) took the loss for MSU, pitching six innings and surrendering 10 hits while striking out four. Ben Quick picked up the win for Purdue to improve to 2-3.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Olds Park in Lansing. Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) and Nick Bates (Jr., Blissfield) are scheduled to start for the Spartans.
