MSU Golf Finishes Seventh In Big Red Classic

OCALA, Fla.- The Michigan State men's golf team earned a seventh-place finish at the 2001 Big Red Classic at Lake Diamond Golf and Country Club in Ocala, Fla. in the team's first tournament of the spring. The Spartans finished with a three-round score of 896 (301- 296-299), 32 over par after Sunday's final round of play. Michigan State finished 31 strokes back of tournament champion Colorado State. The Rams shot an impressive one over par 865 (285-288-292).

Michigan State was led by sophomore John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) and senior co-captain Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.). Both golfers were impressive as they shot 72 in each of Saturday's first two rounds. John Koskinen finished with a 218 (72-72-74), good for a fifth-place tie. Goik was only one shot back as he recorded a 219 (72-72-75), good for ninth place overall.

Michigan State freshman J. J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) finished in 34th place, he shot 229 (77-78-74). Senior Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.) finished two strokes back of Beckstrom to record a 231 (80-75-76). Junior Nathan Clark finished with a 238 (82-78-78) and sophomore Eric Jorgensen completed the tournament with a 240 (81-77-82).

Michigan State's next action will come March 24-25, at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate at the Tanglewood Resort in Lake, Texoma, Texas.
