EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State (2-1) women's tennis team lost to DePaul (1-3), 6-1, Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Spartans played well in the doubles competition to earn the first team point. Senior Natasha Skogerboe (Coon Rapids, Minn.) paired with sophomore Mollie Hood (Bellaire, Mich.) at No. 1 doubles and won their match, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, freshmen Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) and Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) won 8-5.
In the singles competition, No.1 Skogerboe lost a three-set match to DePaul's Laura Taylor, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6. No. 2 Josie Schmude (Traverse City, Mich.), No. 4 Juliussen, No. 5 Hood, and No. 6 Christee Chargot (Port Huron, Mich.) also had close sets.
"Nicki Skogerboe showed much improvement," MSU head coach Tim Bauer said. "She could have some big wins this season. And Trine Lise Juliussen showed the right things to make her a good player.
"It is going to be a long road to a Big Ten Championship and this loss is part of the education of a young team. There are a lot of lessons to be learned. The doubles matches were well played."
The Spartans will take on Eastern Michigan at home Sunday at 10:00 a.m. as the team continues a month of home competition.
