Spartan Women's Track Team Heads To Last Chance Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track team will send two members of the Spartan team to the Last Chance Meet at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. Both sophomore Sherita Williams and junior Ann Somerville have recorded NCAA provisional times in their respective events. If either produces NCAA qualifying times, they will advance to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 9-10. The Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa will be held March 2. Competition in the 3,000-meter run will start at 5:30 p.m., while the triple jump event will start after the women's and men's long jump at 12:30 p.m.
WILLIAMS WOWS IN TRIPLE JUMP: Sophomore tri-captain Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) set the MSU school record in the triple jump for the third time this season with her performance at the Indoor Big Ten Championships Feb. 25. Williams' mark of 41'09.75" was also an NCAA provisional mark, capturing first in the event.
BIG TIME AT BIG TEN: Sherita Williams was named to the All-Big Ten First Team after her performances at the 2001 Indoor Big Ten Championships.
NCAA PROVISIONALS: Junior tri-captains Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) and Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) have both recorded NCAA provisional marks. Somerville ran an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:33.46 at the Iowa State Invitational (Feb. 10). Williams recorded an NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump at Big Ten's (Feb. 25) with a mark of 41'09.75".
INDOOR BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP: The Michigan State women's track team earned 42.50 points in the Big Ten Championships Feb. 24-25 in West Lafayette, Ind. Junior tri-captain Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) led the Spartans in the 1-mile run with a third-place finish (4:58.38). In the 5,000-meter run, Somerville took fourth (16:55.45) and freshman Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Man.) finished seventh with a time of 17:17.51. Junior Swanne Gordon (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) took fifth in the 600-meter run (1:33.99). Sophomore tri-captain Lynlee Phillips (Shamong, N.J.) finished 19th in the weight throw with a mark of 46'02.50".
