YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team sent over 30 individuals to compete in the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, Nov. 3. There was no team scoring at the event because the wrestlers were unattached, not representing Michigan State. However, the matches will count on the official individual records. Former junior college champions Ryan L'Amoreaux (So., Clarkston, Mich.) and Anton Hall (Jr., Ada, Mich.) each earned first place in their respective weight classes.
At 133 pounds, L'Amoreaux scored a decision over Ron Thompson. Hall's decision over Lucas Mackasy came in the 165-pound bracket.
Freshman Nick Simmons (Williamston, Mich.), in his first collegiate meet, earned a decision over freshman teammate Craig Trombley (New Baltimore. Mich.) at 125 pounds. Simmons placed fifth in the 125-pound weight class.
Senior Chris Williams (Perry, Mich.), who finished fourth at 125 pounds, was defeated via decision by Joe Dubuque of Indiana.
Freshman Darren McKnight (Hixson, Tennessee) wrestled at 133 pounds and finished fourth. McKnight lost a decision to David Wallace.
At 141 pounds freshman Eric Keith (Portage, Ind.) was victorious over Eastern Michigan's Darnell Ruffin. Keith finished third in the 141-pound bracket.
Sophomore Nathaniel Mesyn (Clinton Twp, Mich.) finished fifth at 174 pounds while junior John Wechter (Saginaw, Mich.) earned second place at 184 pounds.
