Women's Cross Country Place First At Regional Meet

Terre Haute, Ind. - The Michigan State women's cross country team took first place with 58 points at the Great Lakes Regional Meet at Indiana State University (Terre Haute, Ind.) Saturday, November 10. The men's team placed third with a total of 86 points behind Notre Dame (71 points) and Michigan (82 points). The women's victory earned them an automatic trip to the NCAA Championships in Greenville, S.C. next weekend (Nov. 19). Announcements will be made Monday (Nov. 12) regarding the men's possible trip to nationals as well.
"I'm ecstatic," said head coach Jim Stintzi. "Both teams ran great races."
Senior Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) led the Spartans with a third-place finish and a time of 20:47.1 in the 6K race. Sophomore Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Man.) finished fifth (20:50.5), while sophomore Jaime Krzyminski (Corunna, Mich.) placed 11th (21:24.3) and freshman Katie Anderson (Marquette, Mich.) placed13th (21:26.8).
On the men's side, junior Ben Evans (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was the top finisher in ninth with a time of 30:58.8 in the 10K race. Junior Andrew Alley (Calgary, Alberta) placed 14th (31:10.0) followed by sophomore Jason Mueller (Shelby, Ohio) in 20th (31:23.0), sophomore Andrew Marsh (Grand Ledge, Mich.) finishing 21st (31:26.4) and freshman Chris Toloff (Novi, Mich.) placing 22nd with a time of 31:31.5.
"Both Ann and Ben ran very conservative races," commented Stintzi. "They concentrated on getting the points we needed to get to nationals."
"Andrew Alley really stepped up in this race," added Stintzi. "He made the difference between our performance at the Big 10 Championships and the Regional Championship."
The Michigan State women's cross country team will be competing at the NCAA National Championship Nov. 19 in Greenville, S.C.
