Men's Golf Claims Second at Adams Cup

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Michigan State men's golf team rallied to finish second out of 17 teams Wednesday (Oct. 3) at the eighth annual Adams Cup of Newport. As a team the Spartans carded a final-round score of 285, which tied as the lowest round of the day. Michigan State finished with a three-round total of 861 (295-281-285), which was only seven shots back of tournament champion New Mexico (854). Michigan State led all schools with 174 pars and finished with 35 birdies.
The Spartans received strong performances from junior John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) and rising sophomore J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.), who each placed in the top-five.
Koskinen shot a 1-under final round of 70 on the day after shooting an even score of 70 in Tuesday's second round. Koskinen finished tied for fifth place with a score of 214 (74-70-70).
Beckstrom also finished in fifth as he fired a 2-under final round of 69, which included an eagle. Beckstrom rounded out the tournament with a 214 (74-71-69).
Freshman Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) turned in the team's second best tournament performance as he was the third Spartan to finish in the top-20. Ruthkoski carded a three-round score of 218 (74-67-77), which included a 3-under round of 67 in the second round. He finished only his second collegiate tournament in 19th place.
Junior co-captain Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) was another solid contributor as he shot three rounds of 73. Jorgensen finished with a 219 (73-73-73).
Senior co-captain Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) recorded a 230 (74-83-73) for the tournament.
Vanderbilt's Mark Donnell and New Mexico's Wil Collins were the top individuals of the tournament. They each shot a three-round score of 207, which were four strokes under par.
Wednesday's final round was played at the Point Judith Country Club, a par 71, 6,686-yard layout.
Michigan State returns to action next week (Oct. 8-9) at the Purina Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri.
