Men's Golf Tied For Fourth At Adams Cup

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Michigan State men's golf team is tied for fourth place after Tuesday's first and second round of the Adam's Cup of Newport. The Spartans posted a team score of 576 (295-281), which leaves them 15 strokes off current leader New Mexico, which shot a 561 (280-281). Tournament host Rhode Island also recorded a 576 (294-292) and is tied with Michigan State.
Michigan State's second round score of 281 tied New Mexico as the lowest single-round shot by any team. Michigan State head coach Mark Hankins was proud of the way his team fought back in the second round.
"The team showed a tremendous amount of character in the second round," commented Hankins.
Michigan State received its best performance from newcomer Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) Ruthkoski, a freshman who is participating in only his second collegiate event, recorded a 74 for his first round, then rebounded to fire a 3-under 67 in the second round. Ruthkoski finished the day at 141, which is currently good for eighth place.
"He had a great round and showed a lot of maturity," said Hankins.
Junior John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) shot a two-round score of 144. Koskinen shot a 74 in the first round, but cared an even round of 70 in his second round. Koskinen remains in the top-20 at 16th place.
Rising sophomore J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) contributed by carding a 145 (74-71) for the day. Junior co-captain Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) shot two rounds of 73. Jorgensen finished with a 146. Senior co-captain Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) put together rounds of 74 and 83, which gave him a two-round score of 157.
Tuesday's first and second rounds were played at the Newport Country Club. Wednesday's final round of 18 holes will move to Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, R.I. Action is scheduled to begin at 8.00 a.m.
