Spartan Women's Track Team Will Compete in Meyo Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track team will compete in the Meyo Invitational this weekend, Feb. 2-3 in South Bend, Ind.
Other teams at the meet include: Wake Forest University, Duke University, Mississippi University and Iowa. Georgetown College and Eastern Michigan will be sending some individual competitors.
RECORD BREAKERS: Sophomore tri-captain Lynlee Phillips (Shamong, N.J.) set a new school record in the weight throw event with a mark of 48'06.75, taking first in the event in the Notre Dame dual meet Friday, Jan. 26. Sophomore tri-captain Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) was also a record-breaker in the triple jump, putting up a mark of 40'05.00 at the Notre Dame meet. Both competitors were the previous record holders in their respective events.
WOWING WILLIAMS: Sophomore tri-captain Sherita Williams (Tampa, Fla.) has contributed six first-place finishes in the Spartans first three indoor meets this season. Williams has won the triple jump event every time she has stepped on the track. Her other first-place finishes have come in the long jump and 60-meter high hurdles at the Spartan Invitational (Jan. 12) and in the long jump at the Red Simmons Invitational (Jan. 20).
NOTRE DAME RECAP: The Michigan State women's track team fell short to Notre Dame in a dual meet Friday, Jan. 26. The Spartans scored 71 points in 15 events. Top Spartan finishers were: junior Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.), who took first in the mile run (4:57.50) and 800-meter run (2:14.56), freshman Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Man.), who placed second in the mile run (4:59.26), junior Maia Knox (Ypsilanti, Mich.), who earned second place in the high jump (5'03.00"), and junior Shanna Ashley (Clarendon, Jamaica), who finished second in the 500-meter run.
