EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team continued their winning streak, defeating the Oakland Grizzlies 2-1 this afternoon in East Lansing. The win improves their record to 4-0, while the Grizzlies suffer their first loss of the season, dropping to 1-1-1.
The Grizzlies scored the first goal of the afternoon through Oakland senior Kristen Luoma, unassisted in the twenty-first minute of the game. Seven minutes later, the Spartans responded with a goal on a diving header from senior forward Gina Dawson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), assisted by junior defender Nicole LaPlae (Brighton, Mich.), which tied the game 1-1.
In the second half, Spartan freshman Kristi Arrington (Novi, Mich.) headed a pass from Dawson to score at the 61:10 mark of the game. Dawson led the Spartans in shots on goal, taking four of the 17 shots for the game. Goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington, Mich.) made a critical save with 3:45 left in the game, stopping a header from Oakland midfielder Gail Wilson.
The Spartans defense held the Grizzlies to 8 shots on goal for the game, compared to the Spartans 17.
"I really thought it would take a while for the team to gel," said head coach Tom Saxton. "To come together so fast has been a reason for our success."
The Spartans play on the road for the next two weeks, facing Western Michigan on September 6th and Eastern Michigan on September 10th.
