MSU Men's Golf Finishes Eighth at PSINET Invitational

DELLWOOD, Minn. - The Michigan State men's golf team stumbled today in the third round of the University of Minnesota PSINET Invitational en route to an eighth-place finish. The Spartans shot a final-round 306, the 11th-best team score out of 12 teams, and dropped from sixth place with a total score of 921, one stroke better than ninth-place Notre Dame.
Host Minnesota won the tournament by carding a 290 for a final score of 883. Virginia Tech finished two strokes off the pace with Purdue falling into third place after holding a share of the lead with the Hokies after two rounds.
No MSU golfer landed among the top 20 individuals. Nathan Clark led the Spartans with a 79-71-78--228, good for a 21st-place tie. John Koskinen finished tied for 32nd at 75-81-74--230. Teammates Eric Jorgensen (81-74-77--232) and Dennis Riedel (77-78-77--232) were tied for 35th. Ben Fox rounded out the MSU contingent, tying for 61st place with 83-80-81--244.
Minnesota's Wilhelm Schauman earned tournament medalist honors by shooting three straight under-par rounds (71-71-70--212). Purdue's Lee Williamson was two shots behind at 70-72-72--214.
The Spartans play their third tournament of the fall season next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Ram Intercollegiate hosted by Colorado State University.
