EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team opened the 2000 season with a 1-0 victory over Central Michigan on Friday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The only goal of the contest came from Spartan freshman Tiffany Laskowski (Troy, MI) in the 25th minute of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington, MI) recorded the shutout for Michigan State, stopping six shots, including four in the second half. The shutout is the tenth of her career, placing her only three behind MSU career leaders Kim Owings and Renee Richert.
The Spartans have made a commitment to a more potent offensive attack this season and it paid off early as MSU tallied nine first-half shots, compared to only four by the Chippewas. Although Michigan State only had three shots in the second half, with a lead already in hand it played to the strength of the team: goaltending and defense.
Laskowski and junior Erin Stohl (Westland, MI) led Michigan State with three shots each.
Michigan State will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 27 at Wright State at 1 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
