Skogerboe Advances At Spartan Cup

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - Natasha Skogerboe (Coon Rapids, Minn.) has moved into the quarterfinal round in singles action at the Spartan Cup women's tennis tournament hosted by Michigan State. The MSU senior is the lone Spartan singles player still alive in the championship round. Skogerboe advanced to the round of eight by defeating Illinois-Chicago's Alyson Stalzer 6-3, 6-2. She now faces Eastern Michigan's Rebecca Hawkins in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Four Spartans were ousted in the second round, including Joi McQueen, a 7-5, 6-1 loser to Eastern Michigan's Amalia Lincauru. Theresa Dokianos suffered a 6-0, 6-3 setback to Miami's Emily Frame, Marie Matulewicz, was beating by EMU's Laura Pegula by identical 6-1 scores and Amanda McGinnis lost a lost a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Valparaiso's Patricia Arakaki.
Arakaki advanced by defeating MSU's Laura Delano 6-1, 6-0 in first-round action. Other Spartans falling in the first round included Josie Schmude, who was bested by Eastern Michigan's Lisa D'Amelio 6-3, 6-2. Christee Chargot dropped a 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 heartbreaker to UIC's Zvjezdana Malesevic and Emily Howland fell to Zoria Malesevic of Illinois-Chicago 6-0, 6-0.
The MSU doubles team of Skogerboe and McQueen are also in the quarterfinal round where they'll face Eastern Michigan's D'Amelio and Rebecca Hawkins. Two other Spartan doubles teams - Matulewicz and Amanda McGinnis and Delano and Dokianos - were ousted in the quarterfinals. Chargot and Schumde dropped their doubles opener.
Play at the Spartan Cup continues tomorrow and Sunday. Tomorrow's proceedings will take place at MSU's outdoor tennis facility next to the Duffy Daugherty complex, weather permitting. The tournament will be moved to the indoor facility on Mount Hope Road in case of inclement weather.
