East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team defeated the University of San Francisco, 3-2, on Sunday, Oct. 22. The Spartans improve to 11-4-2 (5-3-1 Big Ten) while San Francisco drops to 7-9-1 on the season.
Michigan State made the only goal of the first half at 36:40 when freshman Andrea Sied (Livonia) scored on a header off a free kick by junior Nicole LePlae (Brighton). LePlae, who leads the team in assists with seven, had another assist in the second half when MSU sophomore Libby Kelly (Saginaw) scored on another header off a free kick at 72:25. The Spartans' final goal came at 74:47 when senior Kate Knorring (Wheaton, Ill.) scored off an assist by junior Emily Clarke (Naperville, Ill.).
USF responded with a pair of goals within two minutes of each other toward the end of the second half. San Francisco's Rebecca Shook scored the first USF goal at 88:24, followed by Kirsteen Buchan's goal at 89:59.
Michigan State wraps up its home schedule on Friday, Oct. 27, when the Spartans battle league-leading Penn State at Old College Field (3 p.m.). On Sunday, Oct. 29, Michigan State will travel to Bowling Green State for its final game of the regular season (1 p.m.). The Big Ten Tournament begins on Thursday, November 2.
