EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Michelle Lisy's goal at the 99:46 mark lifted the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Michigan State in the season opener for both teams Friday (August 27) at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
Sophomore Desiree Erb had a pair of goals as the Falcons posted the team's first-ever win over a Big Ten Conference opponent. Kim van Cleef and Becky Wilger scored goals for MSU.
The Falcons drew first blood when Beth Wechsler's corner kick found Erb for her first goal of the day, just 5:52 into the match. The Spartans equalized late in the first half, when van Cleef tallied off a Libby Kelly assist. That goal, at the 41:41 mark, made the score 1-1 at halftime.
Erb recorded her first career multiple-goal match when she scored at the 62:26 mark. Lisy and freshman Jill Conover drew the assists. The Spartans tied the contest just 32 seconds later, when van Cleef's pass found Wilger for the goal.
MSU goalie Mara Lee, forced to make just two saves in the first 90 minutes, made three stops in the overtime session before the Falcons got a ball past her. Wechsler's pass found Conover on the right side of the penalty box. Conover lofted a short cross to Lisy, who's far-post header beat Lee into the right corner of the goal mouth. For Wechsler and Conover, the assists were their second apiece on the afternoon.
BGSU freshman goalkeeper Erika Flanders played the entire 99:46 to earn the win in her collegiate debut. Flanders made six saves, while Lee made five stops in net for the Spartans, who held an 18-14 edge in shot attempts.
The win was BG's first over a Big Ten team in five tries. The third-year Falcons won the season opener for the second consecutive year.
