EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's men's golf team shot a team score of 298 on Sunday, giving the Spartans a seventh-place finish in the 18-team Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor. In its final tuneup before the Big Ten Championship, MSU shot a two-day, three-round total of 294-297-298=889, its best 54-hole score since March 27-28 at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate (884).
Redshirt freshman Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.) shot a career-low 69 (two-under par) on Sunday to finish in ninth place, the highest individual finish of his career. Clark shot a three-round 71-75-69=215 and was 13 strokes off the pace set by last year's NCAA individual champion, James McLean of Minnesota (202).
Senior Matt Pumford (Saginaw, Mich.) joined Clark in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 17th at 71-72-77=220. He was followed by senior Alberto Quevedo (Canary Islands, Spain) at 227 and two Spartans tied at 230 - sophomore Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.) and junior Carlos Foulquie (Madrid, Spain).
The Spartans were 40 strokes behind team champion Minnesota (three-uner-par team score of 849) and just six strokes out of the top five. MSU finished third out of seven Big Ten teams in attendance this weekend.
Michigan State returns to action next weekend at the Big Ten Championship. The tournament, hosted by Minnesota at the Les Bolstad Course, is a four-round affair from May 14-16.
