Women's Track Places Fifth at Michigan Intercollegiates

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's track team placed fifth at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday night, gathering 27 team points. The host Michigan Wolverines won the event with 181.5 points, followed by Central Michigan (116.5) and Eastern Michigan (109).

Junior Jen Denkins (Flushing, Mich.) continued her strong distance running with a victory in the 5,000-meter run. Her time of 17:32.29 was a full thirty seconds ahead of the second-place runner and is the fastest 5,000-meter time by an MSU runner this season. Junior Leah Nilsson (Williamston, Mich.), running in her first meet of the season, placed third in the same event at 18:10.83.

The Spartans also got a pair of fourth-place finishes from junior Sarah Parbel (Caledonia, Mich.) and freshman Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.). Parbel notched her third top-four finish of the season with a 3,000-meter time of 10:13.01, while Somerville continued her successful debut season with a time of 5:04.13 in the mile run, just over a second out of the top three. Junior Gabriela Dorsch (Hamburg, Mich.) chipped in a fifth-place showing at 3,000 meters with a time of 5:08.13.

MSU will host it's only home meet of the indoor season next week as they entertain Central Michigan and the University of Toledo in a triangular meet Feb. 6 at Jenison Fieldhouse.
