Women's Tennis Wins Season Opener vs. DePaul

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State women's tennis team won its season opener against DePaul on Saturday Feb 7 in a match held at Marquette University. The Spartans defeated the Blue Devils 5-4. On Sunday, Feb. 8, MSU dropped a difficult match to Marquette 7-2 to bring its record to 1-1 overall, (0-0 in the Big Ten).
In the Spartans opening season 5-4 win over DePaul, MSU junior Isabell Oelze took the No. 3 singles with a victory over DePaul's Jeanne-Marie Walker, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Sara Hulewicz won the No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Mandy VanSteenhouse. Junior Jaime Tannenbaum defeated Katie Montgomery, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles. Kelli Hayes scored a win in the No. 6 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, over Amy Slavicek. In the Doubles competition the combination of junior Natasha Skogerboe and Brooke Townsend defeated the DePaul team of Montgomery and Slavicek, 8-4.
During MSU's loss to Marquette the Spartans struggled, winning only two of nine matches. Tannenbaum defeated Jessica Klick, 6-3, 6-1, while Hayes defeated Christine DiMasi, 6-1, 7-6. Townsend and Skogerboe dropped a close doubles match to Klick and DiMasi, 8-6.
Michigan State's next competition will come on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Eastern Michigan. On Sunday, Feb. 15 MSU will return home for the first time this year to take on Michigan at 1 p.m.
