Women's Tennis Falls Short vs. Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis team dropped a tough match to the 28th ranked Michigan Wolverines, 5-2, in its first home meet of the Dual Match season on Sunday, Feb. 15. The loss drops the Spartans to 2-2 overall (0-1 Big Ten) while Michigan improved its record to 4-1 overall.
In the singles competition MSU freshman Kelli Hayes led the Spartans with a victory over Sora Moon, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 position. Hayes has won all four of her dual matches this season. Spartan sophomore Brooke Townsend won her first dual match of the season after returning from a sprained ankle to defeat the Wolverines Jen Boylan, 6-0, 7-6 in the No. 6 position. In the No. 2 position freshman Niki Skogerboe dropped a tough match to U of M's Danielle Lund, 4-6, 4-6, 6-6, while junior Jaime Tannenbaum also was defeated in a close match, 3-6, 7-6, 0-6.
The Spartans came up just short in the doubles competition also, with the Wolverines winning two of the three matches to take the doubles point. The Spartan duo of Skogerboe and Townsend defeated the Wolverines Boylan and Tumeka Harris, 8-5.
The Spartans next competition will take place when Illinois State comes to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
