Women's Tennis Dominates Ball State

EAST LANSING Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis team improved its record to 4-2 overall (0-1 in the Big Ten) after defeating Ball State University, 9-0, on Sat. Feb. 28, at Muncie, Indiana.
The Spartans dominated the competition, with MSU junior Brooke West defeating Gena Tranquada, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position MSU freshman Natasha Skogerboe was victorious 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, over Libby Gerding. Also victorious for the Spartans were juniors Isabell Oelze and Jaime Tannenbaum. At the No. 3 position, Oelze defeated Susie Miller, 6-2, 6-1, while Tannenbaum defeated Darcy Poulos, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4. MSU freshman Kelli Hayes was victorious at the No. 5 position with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Gayle Larsen. At the No. 6 position, MSU sophomore Brooke Townsend saw her winning streak continue to four-straight singles matches with a 6-0, 6-2, victory over Anna Thai.
In the doubles competition, the Spartans swept the three matches with the MSU duo of West and Oelze defeating the BSU team of Gerding and Poulos, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, the MSU team of Tannenbaum and Hayes defeated Miller and Tranquada, 8-3. Also winning at the No. 3 position, was the duo of Townsend and Skogerboe with an 8-1 victory. Townsend and Skogerboe have defeated five out of their last six opponents, and have won their last four matches.
The Spartans will return to action on Sunday, March 1, at 10 a.m., against Miami of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio.
